Ancient Days

everything keeps changing but it still feels like ancient days
these days drag on like your mother at the kitchen table sorting through the bills
i haven’t replied to their invitation and i don’t know that i will
sometimes the skies seem to match my stormy moods
sometimes the ground beneath my feet feels solid and good
these days drag on like your mother at the kitchen counter kneading dough for bread
i haven’t listened to their voicemails maybe i'll email them instead
sometimes the wind whispers ancient prophesies in my ears
sometimes the falling snow melts on my face like tears
everything keeps changing but it still feels like ancient days

Drove from Reno to Elko
Ate in that Basque restaurant you preferred
Wasn't sure where to stay
All of your cousins have moved away
Drove back the way I came
To an empty apartment and more of the same
That time we drove across Wyoming
Into a fast rolling storm
It was raining horizontal
I must have prayed
A thousand times or more
In the desert the distance is liquid
Languid and hazy at the horizon
My memory is not what it used to be
It was never as good as yours
It was never as good as yours
Drove from Reno to Elko
Ate in that Basque restaurant you preferred
Wasn't sure where to stay
All of your cousins have moved away
Drove back the way I came
To an empty apartment and more of the same
Drove from Reno to Elko
